Fractured Indian Electorate - Election 2009

Buxar lok sabha election results are a perfect example of fractures electorate, in this constituency there were a total of 21 candidates trying their luck for this seat and the result was so fractured that it brought the issues with the Indian public and election system to the fore. There was hardly anything to differ between the winner and the three just behind him. In effect 78% of the votes polled went to the losing candidates put together and the winner sailed through with only 22% of the votes. This is not a comment on the eligibility of the winner but a system that is putting forth representatives of public that do not have majority behind them and in turn may not care about the majority.
