Indian Elections 2009: A look at the list of parties across various states in India and it becomes clear that it was not a straight fighe between Congress and BJP but various states threw up different trends and different political parties that are still very strong forces in their own right for times to come. Click here for complete coverage.

Uttar Pradesh is one such case in point where BSP was the second party behind the winning party in 50 seats. So this looks like a highly polarized state between BSP and Others inspite of congress putting up its best show in decades. Congress was number 2 only in 6 seats.

In West Bengal CPI M was number 2 in 23 seats, this shows that the congress ploy to partner with Trinamool Congress indeed helped them and consolidated the anti left votes.

In Tamil Nadu AIADMK was number 2 in as many as 13 seats, so Jayalalitha is still a big force, just that the DMK Congress UPA maths was perfect and consolidation worked perfectly.

In Orissa Congress was number 2 in as many as 13 seats and they should be looking closely at this state as if the can convert even half of these seats the story will be very different.

Similar case was there in Madhya Pradesh where congress was the runners up in 17 seats, so it does indicate a revival of congress in the Hindi Heartland.

BJP needs to look at Maharashtra as the 15 seats where it trailed the winning candidate would have meant a lot for its fortune. Narendra Modi who was the BJP incharge of this state should look at these numbers closely.

In Karnataka it was the Congress that has loads of worries as it was number 2 in 18 seats and JDS was runner up in only 1, it does have a lot of potential for Congress to improve and look at coming to power at the center in the next general elections. BJP needs to take care of this state very carefully.

15 seats in Gujarat where Congress trailed behind BJP could prove crucial for it and BJP needs to look hard at these seats and see to it that it improves its telly next time elections are around.

Though media is writing obituaries for Lalu Prasad Yadav in Bihar but still RJD was the number 2 in as many as 20 seats and is a force to recon with. He can bounce back any time and Nitesh Kumar needs to be on his toes. Congress ended up as number 2 in only 3 seats so it has a long way to go in improving its chances in Bihar. Lok Jan Sakti Party was trailing in 8 seats. Rahul Gandhi needs to look at this state very hard as it is a crucial state for any party looking at coming to the centre all by itself.

In Andhra Pradesh inspite of a sweep by Congress, Telugu Desam was second in 19 seats and Praja Rajyam though did not win any seat in this election it was the runner up in as many as 5 seats.
